Projects
APAMSA is involved with a variety of projects to help serve the Asian population of Columbus, Ohio.
Hepatitis B
The prevalence of Hepatitis B in the Asian community is higher than in the general population. It is our goal to figure out how high this prevalence is and help to provide some type of preventative care to those who could possibly carry this infection. We have worked in conjunction with Columbus Public Health to make a questionnaire to determine the local prevalence of Hepatitis B. We are also providing free screening and education for this disease.

APAMSA Speakers
We have speakers that come in every quarter to talk about issues relating to the Asian community. One of the speeches dealt with depression among the female Asian population.
Bone Marrow Registry
There is a shortage of Asian bone marrow registrants. It is known that successful bone marrow transplants are higher if it is done between people of the same race. It is our goal to recruit more Asians to become a part of this life saving process.
Diabetes and Hypertension Screening
APAMSA, in coordination with the Asian Health Initiative, puts on free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings in the community. We target the Asian American population in Columbus by holding screenings at Hindu Temples, Chinese churches, Asian health fairs, and other locations. We also screen senior citizens throughout the year during the senior citizen meal programs established by Professor Lu of The Ohio State Mathematics Department.
Asian Festival
The Asian Festival is an event that is held every year to promote Asian culture and wellness. The portion of the event that we are involved in is the Health Pavilion. With this, we perform various health screenings and health education to the underserved Asian population who would otherwise not receive this type of preventative care.
Workshops
We work with the Clinical Skills Lab coordinators to organize workshops which teach different skills that students do not have many opportunities to practice during their first two years of medical school, such as phlebotomy, suturing, intubation, splinting, casting and ultrasound. This year, we have organized 2-3 workshops each quarter and offered them to the first and second year classes. All of them have been quite successful and very popular.
Fundraisers
Halloween Grams – Medical students and faculty bought personalized notes bundled to bags of candy. Randomly chosen people also received prizes such as gift certificates to local coffee shops and cafes.
Chinese Yo-yos – To celebrate Chinese New Year and to culture our classmates, Chinese yo-yos were sold and enjoyed by many!
Baby Photo Contest – We collected baby photos from fellow classmates and held a contest where people had to match baby photos to current photos.
Dodgeball Tournament – Teams of 6-8 students and residents played each other for the ultimate prize: medals and gift certificates to local restaurants and bars.
